A guide to looking for that next purchase

The most important aspect when purchasing equipment is to locate the right machinery, vehicle or truck for what you do.

Almost always the equipment you buy will make money for you. A good buyer will spend time stacking up the purchase price of the new or second-hand vehicle against the likely profit from its intended use, also taking into account running (fuel), maintenance and staffing costs.

Shop around to ensure you are buying the best machine and getting a fair deal.

It’s the same with finance. Check out the features and benefits of the product, the specification level, and investigate the company’s reputation for excellent after sales service or back-up.

Finding the best finance company is almost always easier than making a decision on plant, but is often a requirement for many companies who need to retain working capital in their business to pay for every day wages and materials, or to free up capital which may be used to increase turnover or profits.

If you are replacing a machine or vehicle, try to clear it as fast as possible to help repay the loan. You are at risk if you put too high a value on it and no buyers come forward. Space and maintenance upkeep also come at a cost.

Finally, after all that running around, don’t forget to advise your insurance company of your new acquisition. They need to record it onto their books in case of future fire, theft or damage. And if your new purchase is being delivered, check with the seller to make sure it is appropriately insured for the journey. Otherwise arrange it yourself.

Also, buying from a reputable dealer often means they can provide warranties, finance and accept trade-ins.
